Training

Training takes place on Mondays and Wednesdays at St. Colman’s track in Newry. It lasts an hour and starts at 18.30. Coaches would ask that all athletes try to be there a few minutes before that 18.30 so no one misses out on warm up. If you arrive early and the weather is wet or cold, stay in your parent’s car until at least one of the coaches arrives. If you aren’t staying in your parent’s car, stay warm by keeping active – do a few warm ups until one of the coaches arrives – but don’t get in the way of anyone else who is using the track.

On Saturdays we train at 10 AM until approximately 11 AM at either Kilbroney Park in Rostrevor or at St. Colman’s track. Keep an eye out for details and changes on the website, Facebook page or Twitter feed.

Training costs £2 a week and is payable to Madonna on Mondays. All athletes need to resister for membership and annual use of St. Coleman’s track. Details will be sent out to parents early in 2013.

Training consists of a short warm up, followed by either short or middle distance reps. We end each session with a cool down. Coaches are open to suggestions of changes or improvements to training methods.

Unless the weather makes it impossible to train, someone will be there to take a training session. We train rain or shine. A wise old athlete once said “There is no such thing as bad weather, just inappropriate clothing!” , so on cold and/or wet days make sure to wear a hat, gloves, waterproof jacket and leggings/skins/tights.

All we ask is that athletes train regularly, give training 100% and work with the coaches to achieve their best in races. If we pick up a medal or trophy along the way, that’s a bonus ! Finally, there is no point to all this effort if you don’t ENJOY yourself. If training and racing stops being FUN, it’s time to make sure the coaches know what needs to be done about it!
