Blackrock A.C. Cross Country (27/1/2013)

Despite a very cold, wet and windy day we had a very good turn-out at Blackrock A.C.’s Cross country meeting today at The Geraldine’s GFC complex. Due to the rain the course cut up pretty easily and after the Girl’s U9 race it had started to turn into a bit of a mud bath, with the corners becoming very boggy. Despite this, we had a good showing, with athletes participating in almost every age group.

First off for 3 Ways was Olivia in the U11 girls race and she ran a blinder – it was possibly one of Olivia’s best races yet ….. and she was out of her age group! Following this we had the Boys U11 race, with Ryan, Ultan and Odhrán making up a team entry for 3 Ways. With the help of a very quick start the 3 boys were well placed after the first two bends and maintained a steady pace, giving them a good opportunity for a team medal. With about 300 metres to go Odhrán hit the front, stepped up a gear and put about 20 metres between himself and the Boyne A.C. runner in 2nd place. He maintained his pace and finished in a well deserved 1st place. Ryan and Ultan finished close behind in 6th and 8th place respectively to give the boys 1st place in the team event. Well done boys – you have the making of a good team there !

The U13 girls were next, and by now the course had cut up pretty badly. Tara and Blathnaid were representing 3 Ways, again they were running out of their age group, but despite this they ran brilliantly and finished one after the other. Cathal and Daragh were running in the U13 boys next, and both lads ran really well, with Cathal coming in 5th in a very good bunch of runners, and Daragh again ran one of his best races yet and came in a few places later with a tremendous sprint finish.

Cliodhna ran in the girls U15 race and ran a very steady race to finish well up the field in what was by now very difficult conditions, both weather-wise and under-foot. The final race saw the U17 girls and boys, and the U19 girls and boys run together. Sarah represented 3 Ways in the U17 girls, and Conor represented the boys in the U17 boys – both out of their age group by a considerable margin. With this in mind they both finished brilliantly in 2nd and 5th pace respectively.

A few younger athletes also ran in the U7s & U9s events and showed great enthusiasm and potential – well done to you too.

A big “well done” to all our athletes for turning up and running today in very difficult weather conditions and on a very muddy course (proper cross country according to Damian!!). Most of you ran out of your age group, yet still ran, and finished, brilliantly. Keep up the good work at training and this will all be of great benefit when the track season starts!

See you all on Monday at training ….. no rest for the wicked!!!
